I've read other books by Schwab and she's really a wonderful author， one of my favourites for sure， and when I picked this book up I was looking forward to reading another epic novel like Vicious and A Darker Shade of Magic。 I did not realize at the time though that this book is clearly middle grade。 That being said， I did enjoy this book， it was a fun idea and a nice light read， but not quite what I would have liked and I didn't feel particularly interested in many of the characters。 However， o I've read other books by Schwab and she's really a wonderful author， one of my favourites for sure， and when I picked this book up I was looking forward to reading another epic novel like Vicious and A Darker Shade of Magic。 I did not realize at the time though that this book is clearly middle grade。 That being said， I did enjoy this book， it was a fun idea and a nice light read， but not quite what I would have liked and I didn't feel particularly interested in many of the characters。 However， one thing I thought was very interesting is the way Schwab incorporated an idea similar to what she did in her other book Vicious; the idea that people can die without really dying， not quite undead but not entirely as alive as they were before。 I like how she used that same kind of concept while also creating something else entirely。 Rated three stars because it wasn't very satisfactory to my personal liking， but it was a good book and I would definitely recommend this for younger readers and people who enjoy middle grade content。 。。。more

I read this with my 8 year old， and wow。 This book is amazing！ She kept getting mad I would read ahead without her！ I am 100% on board with this author and I hope this book is a series because I’m about to go get all the books！ Just so good。

I was pretty sure I would like this book because Schwab can do no wrong in my eyes， but I was a little worried about it being a middle grade book and if I would be able to relate to the characters。 But I am happy to report that I thought it was fabulous， even as an adult！ I really like the way the book defines what certain words mean and how to pronounce certain things that a middle grade reader might not know。 I thought the lead up and action was pretty good。 I did feel like the main action poi I was pretty sure I would like this book because Schwab can do no wrong in my eyes， but I was a little worried about it being a middle grade book and if I would be able to relate to the characters。 But I am happy to report that I thought it was fabulous， even as an adult！ I really like the way the book defines what certain words mean and how to pronounce certain things that a middle grade reader might not know。 I thought the lead up and action was pretty good。 I did feel like the main action point felt a little rushed， but I remind myself that this is a middle grade book and only 285 pages， so it worked with what it had。 I thought it had a great spooky ambiance and the right amount of thrill。 I thought that Cass was a great， relatable character and I loved her friendship with Jacob。 I also liked Lara and hope to see more of her in the rest of the trilogy。 If this book had been written when I was in middle school I KNOW my bff and I would have devoured it just like I did as an adult。 I 100% recommend this book to middle grade readers who like a little bit of spooky as well as adults who are looking for a quick read！ 。。。more
